Frequently Asked Questions about Habitat


 

Standing Committees


If the heart of our organization is the Board of Directors, our committees are the arms and legs that get things done. By serving as a committee member, you will be directly responsible for some of the many daily tasks required to accomplish our Mission.

It's a great way to have fun, challenge yourself and learn new skills while helping hard-working families in our community. To find out when the next meeting of the committee that interests you will be held, contact the office.


Advisory Board
Responsible for creation and revision of legal documents, including policies and procedures. The Advisory Board presents their recommendations for approval of all other committees.


Building Committee
Responsible for planning and implementing construction projects, including:

  • Obtaining house plans

  • Soliciting contractors & suppliers

  • Coordinating volunteers

  • Supervising construction

The building committee also meets with potential volunteer groups interested in working on a Habitat project.


Church Relations Committee
Acts as a liaison between Habitat and the local churches. Major tasks are:

  • Inform churches of current Habitat activities

  • Educate church groups about Habitat

  • Assist with promoting Habitat with the congregation

  • Encourage participation by churches not currently involved with Habitat


Executive Committee
Oversees implementation and administration of finances, policies and procedures, such as:

  • Develop revenue projections (with Fundraising committee)

  • Preparing annual budget

  • Monitor expenditures

  • Recommend budget adjustment as necessary

All budgets and modifications are submitted to the full Board for approval.


Family Selection Committee
Responsible for all activities involving selection of families to become Habitat homeowners, including:

  • Establishing selection criteria

  • Drafting application forms

  • Reviewing applications & interviewing applicants

  • Current living condition assessment

  • Credit checks

The Family Selection committee presents their selection recommendations to the full Board of Directors for approval.


Family Nurturing Committee
Accountable for the direct support of Habitat partner families, both current homeowners and newly selected families. Some of the committee’s activities are:

  • Arranging sponsorship of new families

  • New homeowner orientation

  • Tracking sweat equity

  • Moving assistance

  • Budgeting education

  • Follow-up and delinquency remediation


Fund Development Committee
Responsible for securing monetary and in-kind support from large donors, including:

  • Corporate fund raising

  • Writing grant proposals

  • Solicitation of major donors


Fundraising Committee

Entails the raising of income necessary to fund all of Habitat’s activities. These tasks encompass:

  • Creation and execution of fund raising campaigns

  • Writing grant proposals

  • Solicitation of major donors

The Fundraising also works with the Executive Committee on the revenue side of the yearly budget.


Nominating Committee
Meets primarily in the fall of each year developing a slate of recommended officers and board members. Convenes as needed at other times to fill vacancies as they occur.


Promotions Committee
Responsible for education of the public at large regarding the mission and activities of Habitat. Typical duties include:

  • Organizing the Speaker's bureau

  • Informing the press of upcoming events

  • Public Relations

  • Producing print materials, including a periodic newsletter

  • Maintenance of this Web site


Site Selection Committee
Engages in all aspects of acquiring property for the affiliate, including:

  • Identification of suitable tracts

  • Negotiating sale or donation of properties

  • Site surveying and perk testing

  • Obtaining building permits

  • Coordinating with utilities and government as needed
