Can I get a free house from Habitat?
No - Habitat does not give away houses. Partner
families invest their own money and sweat equity, helping to build
their own and other families' homes. Each homeowner repays Habitat
for their home via an interest-free mortgage
How
are the families chosen?
Our Family Selection Committee carefully
reviews each application and chooses families based on need,
willingness to work with Habitat and ability to pay for the home.
Doesn't
the government give funds to Habitat to build houses?
Habitat does not receive any federal,
state or local government money to finance the building of homes.
Occasionally, we do apply for grants to fund the purchase of
property on which to build.
I
received a mailing from Jimmy Carter and sent in a donation. Will
my money be used to build homes in Bartow County?
Not directly. Bartow Area
HFH is a separate organization from HFH International (see
above). While donations to HFHI do help fund support programs
for affiliates, only money donated directly
to Bartow Area HFH to insure your money will stay
in the local community.
I'd
like to help, but I don't know anything about construction. Can I
still volunteer with Habitat?
Of course! If you don't know how to
build but would like to learn, we will teach you. We also have
ongoing needs for volunteers to staff our HomeMart
store, help out in the office and serve on committees.
There is something for everyone to do at Habitat.
How
do families pay for a Habitat home?
In addition to their sweat equity labor,
each homeowner repays the cost of their house with a no-profit
mortgage. Their loan payments are returned to our building fund to
help build more houses for needy families.
How
much does a Habitat home cost?
Currently, the typical homeowner pays
around $58,000 for a three bedroom Habitat home, although our houses usually
appraise for over twice that value. The tremendous savings is made
possible through the generous donation materials by our sponsors
and labor by our volunteers.
